Immunity-Boosting Green Smoothie Recipe
It’s that time of year again. Colds and flu run rampant. Winter is dragging on. We all walk around in a daze with stuffed noses, miserable for weeks, right?
It doesn’t have to be that way. And even if you do get sick, your diet can help mitigate the effects of illness, including reducing both severity and duration. In my family, I used to be the one who always got sick first and my colds would last the longest. This is no longer the case. I do still get sick on occasion, usually when I have run myself down with too much training on too little sleep, or when I am stressed out. But today, my worst colds are nothing compared to what they used to be.
A balanced raw vegan diet is absolutely packed with vitamin C, which supports overall health. I track my nutrition and my daily vitamin C is off the charts, no supplementation necessary. Increased vitamin C intake has been shown to halve the incidence of colds in physically active people. As a runner, I have noticed this phenomenon firsthand. It can also help shorten the duration of colds.
A green smoothie is a fantastic way to get more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables into your daily raw food diet. By doing so, you will find that your vitamin C levels soar effortlessly.
In this easy raw food recipe, the kale alone provides a whopping 670% of the RDA for vitamin C. Wow! It also provides ample fiber and nutrition to help support your immune system and overall health. Plus it meets my criteria of being both simple and delicious.
Tip: Keep bags of frozen fruit such as pineapple and strawberries handy so that you always have smoothie ingredients in your home. You can also freeze banana chunks in advance. Store your green smoothies in glass jars with plastic lids for maximum freshness and convenience.
